A desertरेगिस्तान ) is a barren area of land where little precipitation (any product of the condensation of atmospheric water vapor that falls under gravity from clouds) occurs and, consequently, living conditions are hostile (प्रतिरोधीfor plant and animal life. About one-third of the land surface of the world is arid सूखा / बंजर ) (lack of available water, to the extent of hindering or preventing the growth and development of plant and animal life) or semi-arid. Deserts generally receive less than 250 mm (10 in) of precipitation each year. The potential evapotranspiration may be large but in absence of available of water, the actual evapotranspiration may be close to zero whereas Semi-deserts are the regions which receive between 250 and 500 mm (10 and 20 in). Approximately 1/3 of Earth's land surface is a desert.

Most of the people whenever think of a desert, they imagine that desert is a landscape covered with sand and sand dunes. Although many deserts are sand-covered but most are not. Many of the deserts landscapes are rocky surfaces because any sand size or smaller particles on the surface are quickly blown away and finally Rocky surfaces are left. So these deserts are barren wind-swept landscapes.

TYPES OF DESERTS IN THE WORLD

Deserts are as being hot and dry, but some deserts are actually cold! There are four types Of Deserts:

(I) Subtropical Deserts Which Are Hot And Dry Year-Round,

(ii) Coastal Deserts which have cool winters and warm summer

(iii) Cold winter deserts which have long, dry summers and low rainfall in the winter

(iv) Polar Deserts which are cold year-round.

Subtropical Deserts

The Subtropical deserts are the hottest deserts. They are found in Australia, Asia, Africa and North and South America. Subtropical deserts are very hot and dry in the summer and cooler but still dry in the winter. The air is so hot and dry in these deserts that sometimes rain evaporates before it even has a chance to hit the ground. Rainfall happens in short bursts. The largest is the Sahara Desert is a subtropical desert in northern Africa which covers a surface area of about 3.5 million square miles. The soil in subtropical deserts is usually either sandy or coarse and rocky. Shrubs and small trees in the subtropical deserts usually have leaves adapted to retain moisture. Animals in subtropical deserts are usually active at night, when it is cooler.

Coastal Deserts

The Coastal deserts occur in cool to warm areas along the coast. They have cool winters and long, warm summers. Coastal deserts are located on the west coasts of continents between 20° to 30° latitude. Winds off the coast blows in an easterly pattern and prevents the moisture from moving onto the land. The Namib Desert in Africa and the Atacama Desert in Chile are belongs to coastal deserts.

Cold winter deserts

The Cold winter deserts are also known as semi-arid deserts. They have long, dry summers and cold winters with low rain or snowfall. In the United States, the Colorado Plateau, The Great Basin and the Red Desert are all cold winter deserts. Other cold winter deserts include the Gobi desert in China and Mongolia and the Patagonian desert in Argentina. The lack of rainfall in cold winter deserts is often caused by the rainshadow effect (The rainshadow effect happens when a high mountain range stops reaching moisture to an area / land.) The Himalayan Mountains prevent rainfall to reach the Gobi Desert.

Polar Deserts

The Polar Regions, where little precipitation occurs, and theseare sometimes called polar deserts or "cold deserts".Polar desert are found in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Antarctica DesertArctic Desert are Polar Deserts.
